Celebrating 11 years of HuMA: Public Discussion on the Protection and Recognition of the Indigenous People Draft Law

It has been more than a decade many people are debating about indigenous peoples, especially among the social movement activists that put many efforts to make the rights of indigenous peoples to be recognized. There are many terms which would be commensurate with the indigenous people or the unity of indigenous peoples, in both positive and negative images. In fact, this group are exists, its presence, as well as the demanding responsibilities of countries that have acted abolish or put them into negative situations. This situation creating an obstacle to progress.

The struggle for recognition of indigenous peoples rights has been a long-lived struggle. The processes are dynamics, both in practice and in the policy making process. Nowadays, at the policy level, the protection and recognition of indigenous people in the process to obtain a an arrangement in a statute. The draft law for Recognition and Protection of Indigenous Peoples is currently being discussed by the House of Representatives

A series of discussion has been done in civil society, with different interests and different framework. It is time for civil society movements in a variety of colors to consolidate itself to oversee the process of this struggle into a more structured and systematic and cross-issue. HuMa Association, in the 11 years celebration, still fights for the rights of indigenous people, and HuMa feel the need to re-engage civil society colleagues to sit together in the process of unification strategy that ultimately arrive at one of the higher ladder of the struggle of indigenous peoples.

The discussion will present Sunardi Ayub (Chairperson of the Working Committee for the Draft Law for Recognition and Protection of Indigenous Peoples in House of Representative) and will be held at the Newseum Cafe, Jl. Veteran I No 33, Central Jakarta/Jakarta Pusat on Friday, 19 October 2012 at 13.00 to 17.00
