The Jl. Surabaya antique and suitcase market is located in one of Jakarta’s most expensive areas for residential real estate. The market that has 184 stalls with a length of 500 meters has been recognized by the city government as a legal traditional antique market. No wonder if many tourists come to this place because of the classical and antique goods that you will not find in today’s modern shopping center
If you want to buy any goods at this market, check the authenticity of antiques since there are a lot of artificial stuff that looks exactly like the original. The original antiques would have more expensive price. Therefore it would be nice to invite relatives who did understand the classic and antiques items.
This market activity began around 1960, initially only a few vendors that sell flea household items on the pedestrian walk.. Among second-hand goods, there are antiques goods but the seller did not realize it. But after a lot of people are looking for certain antiques, they began to realize the goods that have high sales value and they began to seriously hunt antiques for sale from many areas.
In 1974, Governor Ali Sadikin officially establish this market as as one of the main attractions in Jakarta. Since 1988, the government built semi-permanent kiosks as it can be seen today. Former U.S. President, Bill Clinton, in 1994 had visited the Jalan Surabaya Antique Market.
