Jakarta to Hold Festival to Promote the Old City

Marie Elka Pangestu, Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, and also with Jakarta Governor, Joko Widodo, is optimistic to revitalize the Old Cityarea, West Jakarta. A special authority body consisting of various Indonesian Ministry has also been appointed as the manager of the Old City. For the purposes of the Old City revitalization, Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy with the Jakarta Government and other relevant ministries in Jakarta are planning to hold a festival titled “Kota Tua Create Festival” that will be held in August to September 2013. Mari Elka Pangestu said the event is a way to attract tourists, both local and foreign tourists, to the Old City.

This event is designed to use sponsorship funds in full and will be filled by an assortment of booths consisting of arts-based creative industry culture, fashion, performing arts, and culinary. In order to support the event, museums around the Old City will be open until late at night, at least in every weekend. Inside the museum will be held a variety of events to attract local and foreign tourists.

The Jakarta administration has allocated Rp 12 billion (US$1.2 million) from the 2013 regional budget to renovate the Old City area, which has become shabby due to the many street vendors and squatters. Old buildings in the area are also badly in need of a facelift
