Gedung Direktorat Jenderal Perhubungan Laut or Building of the Directorate General of the Sea Transportation is located on Jl. Medan Merdeka Timur No 5. This building is located just accross the Gambir Station. This building used to be the Koninklijke Paketvaart Matschappij (KPM) building. This Four-level and rectangular building was built in Art Deco style with many attractive ornament. This magnificent building began to be occupied by the Directorate General of Sea Transportation after KPM being nationalized in 1957, When Indonesia and the – Netherlands breakup due to issues of West Irian (Papua). This building was designed in 1916 and built in 1917-1918.
The Nyai Dasima story, a famous historical novel, taking this building as the background. Based on the story, Nyai Dasima with her husband, Meener Willem, and her daughter, Suzana, live in this place. But, from this same place, Nyai Dasima was willing to leave her husband and daughter to become a second wife of Samiun from Kwitang. Nyai Dasima left her family after she was reminded that being a housemate without marriage, let alone with another man with different religion, is great sin.
In the end Nyai Dasima was killed by Bang Puase, a master of Kwitang. Bang Puase hired to kill Nyai Dasima by Hayati, the first wife of Samiun. Bang Puase caught and sentenced to death by hanging at Batavia City Hall. Some people said that these accusations are slanderous. Since Bang Puase was an anti-colonial hero. That said, when Bang Puase walked bravely to the hanging place accompanied by Dutch soldiers
