Yap Thiam Hien Award is taken from the name of a prominent Indonesian lawyer, namely Mr. Yap Thiam Hien (YTH), a servant of the law devoted his entire life fighting for justice and human rights. Born in Kutaraja, Banda Aceh on May 25, 1913 and died on 25 April 1989 in Brussels, Belgium on a trip to the International Conference of Donor Agencies for Indonesia.
During his life, he was known as an advocate who was fighting for the principles of the rule of law and human rights. Furthermore, Yap Thiam Hien has a reputation as a clean and knowledgebale advocate. He defended the oppressed without discrimination on any ground, including political and ideological beliefs. His name became a source of inspiration and encouragement and become the torch for justice and human rights defender in this country, a human rights award in the first time held in Indonesia in 1992. The award is given to individuals or institutions or organizations struggling for human rights.
This award aims to continue the struggle for justice and human rights to the younger generation as a commitment to achieve freedom, justice and civilization through the Yap Thiam Hien Award
