Born in Tangerang in 1903 and he died in Tangerang in 1995. During his lifetime, Oey Kim Tiang (well known as OKT as well) has been translated more than 100 works of translation from Hokkien into Malays (Melayoe Pasar or Melayoe Rendah). In all of his translation, OKT is very strong in maintaining his consistency to use the Hokkien vocabulary in certain terms.
He gained his early education in Tangerang, then continued his education to the Tiong Hoa Hwee Koan (THHK) School, where He studied Mandarin and Chinese history but he was only able to continue his education up to the level of 9 grades.
OKT used to help Ong Kim Tiat – another kungfu novel writer, to translate novels. He was invited to join Keng Po and began to translate Chinese novels regularly. His earlier translation were Nona Badju Idjo and Kawanan Merah Hitam.
He is regarded as one of the people who play an important role in spreading and popularizing the Chinese Malay literature, because his mastery of “Sino Malay” language (or also called as Betawi Malay). Because of that he got praise from Sutan Takdir Alisyahbana and Ajip Rosidi.
If you have a chance to visit Tangerang, OKT homes can still be found in the Old Market area of Tangerang. His house is located not far from Benteng Heritage Museum
