Monumen Selamat Datang: The New Face of Jakarta


Monumen Selamat Datang or Tugu Selamat Datang or Welcome Monument located on Jl. Bundaran HI, Jakarta Pusat/Central Jakarta (It is call Bundaran HI, because it is very close to Hotel Indonesia or now known as Hotel Indonesia Kempinski). This monument was built during the President Sukarno administration, to welcome the delegates of the Asian Games IV in 1960. The design of the statue was sketched by Henk Ngantung, at that time the vice governor of Jakarta. The construction of the statue was done by Indonesian sculptor Edhi Sunarso. The statue depicts two bronze statues of a man and a woman, waving in a welcoming gesture. The woman is shown holding a flower baouquet in her left hand. In total, the monument is about thirty meters above the ground. Selamat Datang Monument symbolizes the openness of the Indonesian nation to welcome the visitors of the Asian Games IV

Bundaran HI is strategicly located in the heart of Jakarta, right in the center of Jakarta’s main avenue, Jalan M.H. Thamrin, on its intersection with Jalan Imam Bonjol, Jalan Sutan Syahrir and Jalan Kebon Kacang. In 22 June 2002, Bundaran Hotel Indonesia was restored by PT Jaya Konstruksi Manggala Pratama with a cost of 14 billion rupiahs. The restoration introduced new fountains, new design of the pool, and new lighting. Nowdays, this spot also become a very popular spot for any organization hold a peacefull mass rally demonstration. Any visitor may take picture at this spot.

From Juanda / Gondangdia / Cikini go to platform 2 and take the Red Line or Blue Line heading to Bekasi/Depok/Bogor and stop at Manggarai and and go to platform 5 and take the Yellow Line heading to Angke/Jatinegara and stop at Sudirman, and take a 12 minutes walk to the north

From Tanah Abang go to platform 3 and take the Yellow Line heading to Depok/Nambo/Bogor and stop at Sudirman, and take a 12 minutes walk to the north
