Pusat Perbelanjaan Sarinah: The First Indonesian Shopping Mall


Sarinah shopping center is 74 meters tall and 15 floors located in Jl. MH Thamrin, Jakarta Pusat/Central Jakarta. This building was built on August 17, 1962, opened on August 15, 1966 and inaugurated in 1967 by the first President of Indonesia, Soekarno. Sarinah building actually built at a cost of war reparations from the Japanese government. Sarinah is the first modern shopping center in Indonesia, and also the first skyscraper in Jakarta. Equipped with elevators and air conditioning, which is a sophisticated facility that time. When Sarinah opening its door, Indonesia’s macroeconomic situation in a very bad. Sarinah name derived from the name of Sukarno in childhood caregivers. Shopping center was first conceived by Sukarno, following his visit to some countries that already has a modern shopping center. It is also intended to make shopping centers to meet the needs of the people get cheap stuff but with good quality.

Sarina is a middle-aged female figure that fills the childhood of Sukarno. She became part of Sukarno’s family. She did not marry, she lived, ate, and worked at the Soekarno’s home. Sarina is a village woman who taught Sukarno about love. Sarinah taught Sukarno to love people. The teachings were rolling every morning, along Sarinah cooking in a small hut that serves as the kitchen, near the house. Sukarno always sat next to Sarinah. In moments like that, Sarinah told Soekarno, “Karno, first you have to love your mother. Then, you must love the common people. You have to love people in general.” That phrase always said to Soekarno by Sarinah every morning.

From Tanah Abang go to platform 3 and take Yellow Line heading to Depok/Nambo/Bogor and stop at Manggarai and change to platform 3 and take the Blue Line/Red Line heading to Jakarta Kota then stop at Gondangdia and take a 16 minutes walk to the East

From Sudirman go to platform 2 and take the Yellow Line heading to Depok/Nambo/Bogor and stop at Manggarai and change to platform 3 and take the Blue Line/Red Line heading to Jakarta Kota then stop at Gondangdia and take a 16 minutes walk to the East
