Museum Joang 45: A Place to Educate the Indonesian Freedom Fighter


Museum Joang 45 or Battle Museum is located at Jl. Menteng Raya No. 31, built around on 1938 and was originally used as a hotel, named Hotel Schomper corresponding name of the owner L.C. Schomper. This hotel is a nice hotel, located in Menteng, Central Jakarta, with a main building that stands majestically in the middle and flanked by a row of buildings inn rooms on the left and right for guests to stay. The hotel was built specifically for the Dutch officials, foreign businessmen, and native officials. Building inn rooms left at this time is located on the north side of the main house and is currently used as a library, a creative child (children room) and an office.

When the Japanese occupied Indonesia in 1942 – 1945, the hotel was taken over by the youth of Indonesia and used as a dormitory known as Menteng 31 Boarding. The building also serves as an office, managed Ganseikanbu Sendenbu (Japanese Propaganda Bureau). From this place then held political education program to educate young people of Indonesia and funded entirely by the Japanese government.

Today this place is one of the museums close to the Hero Statue. Entering the museum, on the left you will find the Introduction Room while on the right is the Japanese Era Room. After passing through the Japanese, you will be taken to the future – a time in the war of independence. The museum has a varied collection of drawings, paintings, dioramas, and also objects or relics from the revolution such as desk of Bung Hatta, the first Vice-President of Indonesia. The collections of Battle’45 Museum are including office cars of the first Indonesian president and vice president, Soekarno and Hatta. Those cars have plate identity # of REP1 and REP2.

The museum is open Tuesday – Sunday from 9 – 15 and Saturday from 9 – 13. Adult ticket price is Rp. 2.000

From Juanda go to platform 2 and take the Blue Line/Red Line heading to Bekasi/Depok/Bogor and stop at Gondangdia and take a 9 minutes walk to the West

From Cikini go to platform 1 and take the Blue Line/Red Line heading to Jakarta Kota then stop at Gondangdia and take a 9 minutes walk to the West

From Tanah Abang go to platform 3 and take Yellow Line heading to Depok/Nambo/Bogor and stop at Manggarai and change to platform 3 and take the Blue Line/Red Line heading to Jakarta Kota then stop at Gondangdia and take a 9 minutes walk to the West

From Sudirman go to platform 2 and take the Yellow Line heading to Depok/Nambo/Bogor and stop at Manggarai and change to platform 3 and take the Blue Line/Red Line heading to Jakarta Kota then stop at Gondangdia and take a 9 minutes walk to the West
