Gedung Perintis Kemerdekaan: The Silent Witness of Indonesia Development


Gedung Perintis Kemerdekaan or Independence Pioneers Building is located at Jl. Proklamasi No. 56, Menteng, Central Jakarta. Construction of the building is marked by the first swing hoe of the Pola Pembangunan Semesta (National Development Plan) proclaimed by President Soekarno on January 1, 1961. This building formerly called Gedung Pola Pembangunan Semesta and designed by Ir. F. Silaban.

This building stands on the site of the old monuments (Proclamation Building) to remember the events of the proclamation of independence 1945. In 1950s, the house and the monument was destroyed by Sukarno himself. Later on the land it was built Exhibition Building of the Pattern National Development (now Independence Pioneer Building) in 1961.

The destruction of old buildings and construction of new buildings appeared to have meaning. In the eyes of Sukarno, the destruction of the building Proclamation was intended to remind people that freedom is the starting point (the bridge) to the end point (just and prosperous society). While construction of the new building marks the beginning of the First Phase Development Plan. This building was built at the expense of Soekarno. Soekarno had to sell his car in order to built this building. Although originally owned by Soekarno, the building was finally handed over to the Government of Indonesia.

This 5 level building is the site of several government and non-government offices, one of the well-known government offices is the office of the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) which areoccupied in Level 1 and 4. While the third floor is filled by Bung Karno Foundation and be a photos of Sukarno, Indonesia’s first president, including a replica of the statue that now stands proudly on Jl. Gatot Subroto and Jl. MT Haryono. There are also, pictures of Bung Karno while visiting abroad, and during a visit to all regions in Indonesia. Not to forget, photo moments proclamation of Indonesia’s independence. In this building there is also a huge state symbol, Garuda Pancasila

From Juanda/Gondangdia go to platform 2 and take the Red Line or Blue Line heading to Bekasi/Depok/Bogor and stop at Cikini and take a 13 minutes walk to the Southeast

From Tanah Abang go to platform 3 and take the Yellow Line heading to Depok/Nambo/Bogor and stop at Manggarai, go to platform 3/5 and take the Red Line or Blue Line heading to Jakarta Kota and stop at Cikini and take a 13 minutes walk to the Southeast

From Sudirman go to platform 2 and take the Yellow Line heading to Depok/Nambo/Bogor and stop at Manggarai, go to platform 3/5 and take the Red Line or Blue Line heading to Jakarta Kota and stop at Cikini and take a 13 minutes walk to the Southeast
