Gedong Galangan Kapal VOC: The Very Old Cafe of Jakarta


Gedong Galangan Kapal VOC or VOC Shipyard Building is located on Jl. Kakap No. 1, Jakarta Utara/North Jakarta. The building was founded in 1628 and is used for making small boats as well as repairs for large vessels owned by VOC. VOC Shipyard built on an area of 2,000 square meters and mark as one of the supporting crucial elements for global trading network of the VOC.

Although built in the era of VOC rule, but the building is to apply a blend of Chinese and European architectures. This can be seen by the number of building structures and ornaments are still original since 4 centuries ago. For example, the barrier between buildings that are not plastered, construction on the building at the rear distinctively Europe still preserved despite having been burned, and the use of wood-based materials in some parts that are characteristic of Chinese culture is still maintained.

The combination of architectural styles in this building, made this building a forerunner to the birth of Betawi culture, which are widely adopted Chinese and European cultures. Moreover, people from different ethnic, did trade activities in the region, such as China, Africa, Arabia, India, and Europe.

Currently the VOC Shipyard building have been converted into restaurants, but still serves Europe, China, and Betawi culinary, like roast peking duck with three flavors, bread duck skin, Oxtail Pitung, Ship Anchors, Chicken Syahbandar, and Ujung Kulon. As for the name of the restaurant, they still reflect the use of “VOC”. But it is not Vereenigde Oost Indische Compagnie, but Very Old Cafe.

In addition to the restaurant, the place is also often used as a meeting hall for various events, such as weddings or other large events. There is also a gallery of paintings and gold coffin known as a repository of valuable items 1 MX 1.2 meters in size.

From Juanda/Gondangdia /Cikini go to platform 1 and take the Red Line or Blue Line to Jakarta Kota. Go to the north exit and take a 20 minutes walk to the north

From Tanah Abang go to platform 3 and take the Yellow Line heading to Depok/Nambo/Bogor and stop at Manggarai go to platform 3/5 and take the Red Line or Blue Line to Jakarta Kota. Go to the north exit and take a 20 minutes walk to the north

From Sudirman go to platform 2 and take the Yellow Line heading to Depok/Nambo/Bogor and stop at Manggarai go to platform 3/5 and take the Red Line or Blue Line to Jakarta Kota. Go to the north exit and take a 20 minutes walk to the north
