Monumen Pembebasan Irian Barat: Important but Forgotten


Monumen Pembebasan Irian Barat or West Irian Liberation Monument is a monument built to remember the struggles of the Trikora fighters and the people of West Irian. The monument is located in the center of Lapangan Banteng. The initial idea came from Soekarno fo the creation of this monument, and it was then translated by Henk Ngantung in sketch form.

This sculpture describes a person who has been freed from the shackles of Dutch colonialism. This statue is made of bronze and executed by Sculptor Tim Pematung Keluarga Are Yogyakarta under the leadership of Edhi Sunarso. The monument was inaugurated on August 17, 1963 by Sukarno.

From Gondangdia /Cikini go to platform 1 and  take Red Line or Blue Line heading to Jakarta Kota and stop at Juanda. Take a 15 minutes walk to the Southeast

From Tanah Abang go to platform 3 and take the Yellow Line heading to Depok/Nambo/Bogor and stop at Manggarai. Go to platform 3/5 and  take Red Line or Blue Line heading to Jakarta Kota and stop at Juanda. Take a 15 minutes walk to the Southeast

From Sudirman go to platform 2 and take the Yellow Line heading to Depok/Nambo/Bogor and stop at Manggarai. Go to platform 3/5 and  take Red Line or Blue Line heading to Jakarta Kota and stop at Juanda. Take a 15 minutes walk to the Southeast
