Galeri Seni Kunstkring or Kunstkring Art Gallery is located on Jl. Teuku Umar No. 1 Jakarta Pusat/Central Jakarta, occupying Heutsz Boulevard buildings, a building with very distinctive architecture with two towers on either side. This building was formerly known as Bataviasche Kunstkring and serves as a center for arts in Batavia. The building, designed by PAJ Moojen in 1913 is considered a pioneer of modern architecture in the Dutch East Indies.
In the 1920s, Bataviasche Kunstkring became the center of the indigenous elite and European artists who lived in the Dutch East Indies. They held a prestigious exhibition with paintings borrowed from collections of major museums in Europe. The works of great painters such as Marc Chagall, Van Gogh and Picasso ever exhibited in this building.
After Indonesia’s independence, the building was used as an immigration office until 1997. The return of initial function of this building after 98 years, give some fresh air to the art activist. If you come to Kunstkring Art Gallery located on the second floor of this building, you can be tough a diverse range of works of art made in the early 20th century. All work shown here has a meaning related to the times. After enjoying the work – art class, you are able to spend time on the 1st floor lounge and terrace to enjoy a comfortable and the antique atmosphere
