Indonesian modern judicial history has been started since the VOC established its headquarter in Batavia. The Jakarta History Museum and Museum of Fine Arts and Ceramics played its role as a place of a courthouse. On May 1, 1848, the Daendels Palace eventually functioned as Hoogerechtshaf building in Batavia as the highest court in the Dutch East Indies. This building is still used as the Supreme Court building despite a change of government, both in the Japanese, in the Independence, during the occupation, and the return of the Indonesian capital of Jakarta.
During the occupation, the Supreme Court location switch to Yogyakarta, at the same time the occupation of the Dutch East Indies Army also set Hoogerechtshaf in Jakarta which is housed in the Daendels Palace. Indonesian Supreme Court at the time headed by Dr. Mr. Kusumah Atmadja (chairman), Mr. R. Satochid Kartanegara (vice-chairman) and three members namely Mr. Husen Tirtaamidjaja, Mr. Wirjono Prodjodikoro, and Sutan Kali Malikul Adil. Meanwhile The Hoogerechtshaf was led by Mr. G. Wijers and had two Indonesian and two Dutch as the deputies and one Procureur General.
During Ali Said – Purwoto Suhadi Gandasubrata as head of the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court decided to build the the new building for the Supreme Court located on Jl. Medan Merdeka Utara No. 9-13, Central Jakarta. The new building cost Rp 9 billion out of the cost of consultants and building contractors.
In 1989, MA officially moved from Weltevreden Palace into their new building with four solid pillars. The four pillars reflect the four court of justice; general courts, religious courts, the administrative court, and military court.
