Jakarta Night Festival 2013: A Celebration to mark of Jakarta’s 486th Anniversary


Started from June 2 to July 3, 2013, the government of Jakarta will held 17 major events to welcome the 486 th anniversary of Jakarta which falls on June 22. In addition to Car Free Night on June 22, which will be filled with Jakarta Night Festival (corridor Sudirman – Thamrin – Monas), there will be other annual events activities such as Jakarta Great Sale, Jakarta Fair, Jakarnaval, and Abang None beauty pageant.

The opening series of the show will be performed at the Center for Small Industries (PIK) on June 2, 2013 to be proclaimed by the Governor of Jakarta, Joko Widodo. Head of Jakarta Tourism and Culture, Arie Budiman said that the focus of this event is to provide entertainment to the people. They will also be held sporting events such as Jakarta 10K and the World Golf Championship.

The Jakarta Cultural and Tourism Agency will also organizing a legendary Betawi performance, Ariah. Arie Budhiman, Head of Jakarta Cultural and Tourism Agency, said the musical show would be a new addition to the annual festival as part of the celebrations to mark Jakarta’s 486th anniversary.

The musical is based on a true story about a poor girl, Ariah, who fell victim to abuse. She died while defending herself in 1870 in Ancol, North Jakarta. The story was adapted into a soap opera, Si Manis Jembatan Ancol (Sweet girl from Ancol bridge), which became a popular ghost story in the 1990s.

The free performance will be staged at the Medan Merdeka Square in Central Jakarta on June 29 and 30.
