Rumah Keluarga Souw: The Souw Heritage in Jakarta

Rumah Keluarga Souw or Souw Family home is located in Jl. Perniagaan, Jakarta, not far from SMUN 19 Jakarta. The house with High fenced that almost close the house yard coupled with large trucks converge in front of the house make it uneasy to see the building. Souw was a famous and very wealthy family in Batavia.

Souw Siauw Tjong not only rich but also socially oriented. He set up schools for boemipoetra children on his land, helping the poor, provide food and building materials during a fire disaster. Due to its nature, the Tjong earned lieutenant (honors) from the Dutch East Indies government in May 1877. His name is also listed as a donor on renovation of the Temple Boen Tek Bio in Tangerang and Temple Kim Tek Le (now Jin de Yuan) in Batavia

The building with Swallow tail roof style is a reminder that the home owner was the Chinese community leader appointed by the Government of the Netherlands Indies. Even ordinary rich citizens can only wear saddle style roof and should not be wearing a pair of lion’s stone before his his house. Though currently the Lion Stone house keeper is not there yet, but estimated the house used to have a pair of stone lions to keep this house.
