Gedung Pertunjukan Bharata Purwa: A Place to watch Javanese Classical Art in Jakarta

Gedung Pertunjukkan Bharata Purwa or Bharata Purwa Performing Building is located in Jl. Kalilio No. 15, Jakarta Pusat. The tiny building with the typical architecture of Central Java is located not far from the Senen Bus Station and in front of the Atrium Mall in Senen, Central Jakarta.

No need to worry about the condition of the building may look old; this is a newly renovated building, clean and fully air-conditioned. It is equipped with clean toilets. The stage has good lightings and sound systems too. New experience will begin at the moment when you enter the building. There are some senses of Javanese art feeling when you buy your ticket. There is no waiting room here, because each visitor will be asked kindly for direct entry into the venue.

The regular shows are available only every Saturday at 8 PM – 11.00 PM. All performance is delivered in Javanese language, but there is a running text over the stage in Bahasa Indonesia. Some limited copies of summary of the story are available in Bahasa Indonesia for those who do not understand Javanese, and can be obtained from the ticket booth

If you feel hungry during the show, no need to move from where you are sitting, just call the “service delivery” back and forth while the show lasted. The concept of “dining cinema” is also applied here (even long ago). The menu is quite diverse, there Ketoprak, boiled or fried noodles with egg, fried rice, chicken noodle, and others. Also there are a variety of beverages, from coffee to soft drinks.

Along the performance you will also see some viewer throwing gift to the stage, it is common in the Javanese performing art. They will throw gift and the players pretend to be surprised and collect the gifts, usually a package of cigarettes or other small gifts as a token of appreciation.

Now there is no need to leave the capital to enjoy watching wayang orang in other parts of java.
