Sriwijaya Hotel Jakarta is located on Jalan Veteran No. 1 Jakarta Pusat (Central Jakarta). Sriwijaya Hotel has a unique history, and became a witness of Jakarta’s history.
Back in 1863, Conrad Alexander Willem Cavadino started a restaurant business and baking at the corner of Rijswijk (now Jalan Veteran) and Citadelweg (also Jalan Veteran). In 1872, Cavadino Restaurant turned into Cavadino Hotel while Cavadino Bakery, which was located in front of the hotel, accommodated his retail business.
Just imagine that in 1863 if you want some sweets, chocolates, wines, beers, liquors or cigars from the Netherlands, Havana, and Manila, you can go to the Cavadino Shop. And if you felt hungry you could head upstairs to the Cavadino Restaurant Cavadino, where you can also see the flowing canal. If you need some sleep you could get a room at the Cavadino Hotel.
It was so famous that the bridge located in front of the hotel was named after it. Now Cavadino Bridge is located next to Sriwijaya Hotel, adjacent to the hotel entrance.
Cavadino Hotel survived until 1898 when it transformed into Hotel du Lion d’Or. Later in 1941, it changed its name to Park Hotel. In the mid 1950s the hotel officially became Sriwijaya Hotel. This Hotel was briefly used by the Indonesian Air Force as a mess hall, presumably where the old restaurant had been. The Cavadino Shop is now called the Bintang Meeting Room.
Although most of the old buildings are no longer visible since it was replaced with the addition of new materials but at least traces of the colonial era hotel is still maintained until now.
