PT KAI to scrap Economy Commuter Train in August 2013


PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) to abolish the economic commuter train in August 2013. President Director of PT KAI Ignatius Jonan said the subsidy for economy commuter train will end in July 2013. Jonan said that his is is ready to face all the pros and cons within the society.

Tri Handoyo, President Director of PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek PT (KCJ), said removal of economy commuter train had no significant effect on the carrying capacity of the train passengers. Tri also said the capacity of the commuter line is sufficient to replace the economy commuter train. Nowadays the transaction for commuter line reached 500.000/day while the transaction for economy commuter train is only 30.000/day.

To increase the passenger capacity in Greater Jakarta, Jonan said that PT KAI will add 180 car units this year. These trains will start coming in August 2013 and operated after receiving certification from the Directorate General of Railways Ministry of Transportation.

PT KCJ is operating 600 train car with 450 train cars is operated daily and the rest in reserve at any time when needed. With the addition of these trains, the number of train travel in the Greater Jakarta is planned to increase to 575 trips per day by the end of 2013.

With the economic train replacement by Commuter Line, then there will be single fare for train travel within Greater Jakarta. This time, PT KAI KAI has imposed a progressive ticket fare based on the distance of each passenger.
