After waiting for more than two decades, Jakarta finally kicked off the development of a railways based mass rapid transportation system that will improve public transportation services and address the issue of traffic congestion.
Although I disagree to the naming of Jakarta MRT, but it is the official name of the Jakarta owned railways based transportation system. Currently, the railways based transportation system (known as Commuter Line) is only owned and managed by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) and PT Kereta Commuter Jabodetabek (a subsidiary company of PT KAI, widely known as PT KCJ).
The Jakarta MRT groundbreaking ceremony was on Thursday, 10 October 2013 while Jakarta Monorail groundbreaking is today. Both groundbreakings are marked as the symbol of the city ability to improve its public transportation services to the Jakartans.
Jakarta MRT will have two lines which are North-South Line – from Lebak Bulus to the Kampung Bandan Railways stations – and the East –West Line, from Cikarang (Bekasi) to Balaraja (Tangerang). The first phase of North – South Line of the Jakarta MRT is to build the 15.7-kilometer long from Lebak Bulus to the Hotel Indonesia (HI), which is expected to be complete in 2018. While the second phase will later be extended to Kampung Bandan railway station in North Jakarta, which is expected to begin operating in 2020.
While for Jakarta Monorail, There will be two monorail routes. The first will be the Green Line route that will serve Kuningan- Kuningan Sentral-Gatot Subroto-Senayan-Asia Afrika-Pejompongan-Karet-Dukuh Atas-Kuningan. The second route will be the Blue Line that will serve Kampung Melayu-Tebet-Kuningan-Casablanca-Tanah Abang-Roxy-Taman Anggrek. The monorail train which is consists of 6 cars will bring at least 200 passengers and at least 25 monorail trains will be operating each day.
These massive and costly projects are an effort of the Jakarta administration to prioritize an effective and efficient public transportation system. The Jakarta administration also wants to integrate all kind of public transportation operating in Greater Jakarta. There will be a plan to integrate TransJakarta, Commuter Line, Jakarta MRT, and also Jakarta Monorail.
All projects and plans need to run in a simultaneously. And finally we can hope that Jakarta will have more efficient people mobility by the integration of all modes of public transportation.
