Toko Kompak: The Forgotten Chinese Heritage

Passer Baroe is one of the oldest markets in Jakarta , but it is uneasy to see any heritage building from the past that can still be found . If you ever visit Passer Baroe, look for the Toko Kompak (Kompak Store) at Jl. Pasar Baru No 18 A. Although the name is Toko Kompak, the store is only sells a few merchandise bags and other small items. This shop seems act as residence for the owner so when we went into this shop, it feels more we went into the living room rather than to a store.

This two level building is actually a commercial house (or Ruko), where the family lived on the second floor and trading activity is happening on the ground floor. The Toko Kompak is still using Chinese architectural styles with authentic Chinese ornaments. According to source, Toko Compact is already existed even before the area was officially opened as Passar Baroe in 1820.

Originally, this house is the residence of of Major Tio Tek Ho (1896-1908), one of the 5 Chinese major appointed by Dutch Indies government to coordinate the Chinese residents in Batavia. Above the entrance door of the Toko Kompak, there are two plates like medallion hanging and reads “Pasar Gambir, 1908″
