Up to 1913, there were two railway companies serving the public transport in Batavia, the first is Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatchappij (NISM), which is a private company and Staatspoorwegen (SS) which is a state enterprise.
NISM has a train line that serves the Batavia Noord – Sawah Besar – Noordwijk (Juanda) – Weltevreden (Gambir) – Kebonsirih – Pegangsaan – Boekitdoeri up to Meester Cornelis NIS. In addition there is also the a branch route from Boekitdoeri heading to Buitenzorg (Bogor). While SS has a train line that serves the loop line of includes Kemayoran – Pasar Senen – Salemba – Cikini SS – Tanah Abang – Doeri – Angke – Batavia ex-BOS and returned to the Kemayoran. Additionally SS also has a feeder railway line between Tanjung Priok Port – Batavia NIS, Tanjung Priok – Batavia SS, and Tanjung Priok – Kemayoran.
After NISM purchased by SS, then there are some train lines were removed such as train line from Tanah Abang – Cikini SS – Salemba – Kramat and replaced with a new train line from Tanah Abang – Mampang – Manggarai – Meester Cornelis (Djatinegara). While the branch from Pegangsaan shelter heading to Salemba was still used as an access to the opium plant factory. Nowadays all train lines is gone.
Jembatan Rel Ciliwung or Ciliwung Railway Bridge is located at the intersection of Kramat – Salemba and this bridge is the only living landmark from the former rail line. Now the Ciliwung Railway Bridge serves as a pedestrian bridge.
