The airport railway is aimed to reduce emergency traffic congestion near the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (SHIA) in Tangerang, Banten, by connecting the airport to Jakarta. The airport railway will connect SHIA with Manggarai Station in Central Jakarta. The train will carry up to 12 million passengers per year, with a total 128 trains operating on the entire route from Manggarai to Tangerang.
Using @CommuterLine, the journey time from Manggarai to SHIA will be 45 minutes. The SHIA station would be equipped with platforms that could fit up to 2,000 passengers and others facilities such as a public hall, tapping gates, waiting lounges and commercial areas.
The construction of a @CommuterLine network to and from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport has caused the airport operator to divert traffic by closing the only access route that connected the Tangerang. A concrete pillar is plant on a plot of land located in front of Building 632, a storage facility owned by airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II.
Previously, the SHIA railway is scheduled to begin operations by the end of 2014. Jakarta administration and PT KAI vowed to complete the airport railway project in 2015.
