Komisi Pemberantasan Korupsi or Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is a leading Indonesia’s government agency to combat corruption. KPK is established following strong criticism of corruption in Indonesia. Corruption was “rampant”, systemic, and widespread which lead to the enactment of the Law No 30 Year 2002 as legal basis for the establishment of the KPK.
The establishment of KPK is a a new effort from Government of Indonesia to fight corruption. The agency shall not monopolize the anti-corruption effort, but should act as a trigger mechanism to empower other judicial institutions to become more effective to fight corruption. Therefore the agency only handles selected cases.
KPK has several duties under the law including investigating and prosecuting corruption cases and monitoring the governance of the state as well as conducting prevention activities such as socialization, education, research into the potentials for corruption of each government institution, and also provide the basis for a long-term anti-corruption strategy in Indonesia
